Essential factors and complexity in autonomous driving
Introduction
Automated driving currently is transforming the automotive industry and will rely on several key technologies that are still under construction. Even though the journey to full autonomy already started, there are many justified doubts whether we will see the large scale deployment of autonomous vehicles. We will shed light on the big picture of autonomous driving, highlight some critical key stones that will cause trouble and contribute to the discussion of how and when we no longer have to drive on our own.
Christophe Quignon is leading a team of algorithm developers at Altran’s advanced driver assistance systems unit in Munich. With a strong background in user experience design, he is now focused on the latest developments in machine learning and intelligent robotics. His team combines knowledge of adaptive control, mathematics and computer science to strengthen research and development projects for leading companies in the field of robotics and automotive. Currently he is pushing towards a higher autonomy level by estimating a road model from local sensors only.

Road models for high level autonomy - How self driving vehicles will stay on the road

Introduction
In the last years, several companies started a race to map the world with a 10cm precision to enable autonomous driving. To be able to steer a car to a given destination, the car needs to know the exact location of all roads, lanes and blocking objects as precise as possible. Having access to a HD map along the ride is set as a requirement. But what do we do when the road changed, for example at construction sites? What do we do when we cannot locate ourselves on the map? In this case, we must rely on on-line sensor measurements to build the road model around the vehicle.
Ir. Wim van Ekeren obtained his Master of Science not so long ago at the TU Delft on the subject of Non-linear Flight Control at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Now, he has a position as Consultant for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems at Altran in Munich. He is function developer for vehicle dynamics and control at BMW and also performs algorithm development for Autonomous Driving at BMW. For his work in autonomous driving, the focus lies on building a robust on-line road model in urban scenarios.

Student team URE – autonomous race-car URE1
Student team University Racing Eindhoven already exists for 15 years and with the experience of building electric race cars, the first autonomous race car of the Benelux will be developed this year. The car will drive completely autonomous on an unknown track as the surrounding is detected and mapped using LiDAR sensors. After the first lap, the path is optimized towards the ideal racing line and send to the actuators. http://universityracing.tue.nl/electric/cars/ure11/
At the end of August, URE will give an autonomous demonstration on the TU/e Campus and aims to participate in the Formula Student Driverless competition during the 2019 season.

 

Assurance of autonomous vehicle systems and software - How can autonomous vehicles be accepted in cooperation with human road users?
How can autonomous vehicles be accepted in cooperation with human road users? Human behavior is only predictable to a certain level. One of the golden rules for traffic engineering is: “The road user will surprise you”. Machines are much more predictable. Can we ensure a good cooperation between those two groups of future road users? What can we learn from history? Expectation is a growing area where vehicles operate autonomous, digitally connected to each other and the infrastructure, without human “disturbance”. The last mile operation could either be manual or automated at low speed.
Ir. Jeroen van der Werf holds a position at Altran as Solution manager/ Program Manager (Automated driving. He is responsible for the development and activities of Altran in the autonomous driving domain. Jeroen has 15+ years of experience in infrastructure (rail and road) operation of which 5+ years’ experience in cooperative information systems (V2X). He has worked on several projects developing cooperative functionalities. He received his MSc degree in Technology and Innovation from the Eindhoven University of Technology.
