Lightyear has received an order for 10.000 cars at leasing company Arval. This is the second model of the solar cars, production of which will start at the end of 2025.
This brings the number of orders for the Lightyear 2 to 21.000. Earlier, car-sharing platform MyWheels, among others, ordered thousands.
Lightyear makes cars with solar panels on the roof, reducing the need for drivers to stop at a charging station. The first version of that car, the Lightyear 0, costs more than 250.000 euros. Less than a thousand of those will be produced.
With the Lightyear 2, the automaker is aiming for a lower price tag and thus a larger market. The target price is less than 40.000 euros. Starting in 2026, the company aims to produce 200.000 cars per year.
